Victoria Day is a Canadian statutory holiday celebrated in every province and territory. In Quebec, the holiday is referred to as the “National Patriotes Day” (Journée nationale des patriotes). This year it falls on May 22. The holiday honours Queen Victoria’s, who reigned over Canada and Great Britain between 1837 and 1901, birthday.
There are so many fun family activities that you can easily share with your son or daughter this Victoria Day Long Weekend. One activity that may spark your attention is the return of the Royal Canadian Circus. The circus will be at Abbottsford, B.C. between May 19 and May 22, 2017 at the Sevenoaks Shopping Centre Parking Lot. To purchase your circus tickets click here.
Scavenger Hunt
This can be done both indoors and outdoors and is one of the most fun activities to share with your children of all ages on Victoria Day. The activity will keep the kids busy for hours. For younger kids, simply make a list of things for them to find, such as common animals and birds found in the backyard and key places in the community. For the older kids, make the game more stimulating by setting up brain teasers that will require some inquiry and problem solving skills.
Visit a Petting Zoo
Nothing piques kids’ curiosity more than baby animals, so a visit to a petting zoo (or even a pet store) is a definite hit. Which child does not love to ride a pony or to pet a goat and, in the process, learn about how other things inhabit this planet.
Create Fun Outdoor Board Games
In the right hands, coloured tape and chalk can make magic happen quite easily. You can create any game you’d like, from snakes and ladders to monopoly to twister on the sidewalk, on the grass or on the deck in your backyard. You may even consider customizing each game to include tasks like making silly face, singing a song or doing the chicken dance.
Set up a Family Boot Camp in your Backyard
This is yet another fun family activity to share with your son or daughter. Begin the day with a brainstorming activity: which activities to include in the exercise track: jogging, biking, yoga, pushups etc. Once you’ve mapped out the exercise tract from start to finish, set it up along with your kids. Which child does not enjoy building things with their parents? During the boot camp festivities, you may wish to use apps like Round Timer to time interval workouts. Repeat activities throughout the summer to allow for your kids to better their time.
Purchase Circus Tickets
The Royal Canadian Circus is in town. The circus is a travelling show, so it does not stay in one town for a very long time, making it a rare gem for Abbotsford. Each performance promises to have everyone on the edge of their seats, children and adults alike. With your children, you can be a kid again yourself, and enjoy knowing that you helped create smiles, laughter and long lasting memories that will become wonderful stories told for many years to come. It is refreshing to switch it up and do something exceptional with your family, especially on a long weekend when everyone is home and looking for fun activities to do.
We’ve been generating smiles and endless “ooo’s” and “awe’s” this year in Surrey, Vancouver and will be in Abbotsford this weekend, Saskatoon, Moose Jaw and Regina in June and July. In August we’ll be in Etobicoke, Ontario near Toronto. We’ve also got shows scheduled in Calgary, Edmonton, Medicine Hat, Fort McMurray and more. So check us out…follow and Like us on Facebook for the best in unique fun family summer activities and entertainment. We look forward to delighting you all beyond your imagination!
